Sindh has launched a centralized EMR system. Here is what an electronic medical record is, and what it means for you as a patient.

Quick answer

An EMR system keeps your medical record in digital form instead of on paper. Mayo Clinic says an electronic medical record is kept by healthcare providers and holds basics plus visit notes and test results.

On 20 October 2026, Sindh launched a centralized EMR platform, designed to replace fragmented paper records with one secure, accessible patient history across public health facilities in Sindh.

An EMR is not an emergency service. In an emergency, call 1122.

1. What Is an EMR System? Electronic Medical Record Explained

An electronic medical record (EMR) is a digital version of your health record, kept by the people who care for you. Mayo Clinic says an electronic health record, also called an electronic medical record, is kept by healthcare providers, hospitals and insurers. This guide uses the two names for the same thing, as Mayo Clinic does.

What can be inside? NHS England describes a record as a full account of contact with a patient, including findings, decisions, actions taken, medication and treatments. It can also hold lab and imaging reports, letters, photos and messages with the patient.

2. Sindh’s EMR System: What Has Launched

On 20 October 2026, Sindh Health Minister Dr Azra Fazal Pechuho and Sherin Varkey, Practice Manager, Health (Middle East, North Africa, Afghanistan and Pakistan), The World Bank Group, jointly inaugurated Sindh’s Electronic Medical Records System and digital healthcare initiatives at a ceremony in Karachi. Health Secretary Tahir Sangi, SIEHS CEO Lutaf Ali Mangrio and PPHI Sindh CEO Javed Ali Jagirani also attended.

One patient. One record. Smarter Systems. Healthier Sindh. Which facilities are connected, and from when, is decided by the Sindh Health Department, so ask your facility.

3. What an EMR System Means for Patients

NHS England explains why electronic records matter in a GP setting in England. These are the benefits it lists:

Sindh’s launch line, “One patient. One record”, points to the same goal: one history that every doctor who needs it can reach. How this works in each Sindh facility is for the Sindh Health Department to explain.

4. At the Hospital: What to Keep Ready

At a facility, staff open your record with your MR (medical record) number. Apna MR number note kar lein.

An EMR does not remove the need to speak up. Tell the doctor what you are taking and what you are allergic to, every time.

5. Should You Keep Your Own Health Record Too?

MedlinePlus says it is a good idea to keep your own personal health record, because doctors’ offices and hospitals each keep their own medical records. Mayo Clinic says a personal health record can bring together information from several providers and pharmacies that may not share records.

What to include, per MedlinePlus:

  • Name, birth date, blood type and emergency contact
  • Major illnesses and surgeries, with dates
  • Medicines and supplements, with doses
  • Allergies, chronic diseases and family history

Mayo Clinic also notes that phones and wallet cards can share key details with first responders. Its page names a phone Medical ID feature for this.

Keep it up to date. Mayo Clinic says a downside is that you usually have to update your own record, and any portal content still needs checking for errors.
