AUTOMOTIVE - MECHANIC

General Purpose

The Auto Mechanic will be responsible for the maintenance, repair, and servicing of ambulances and emergency vehicles and Pool Cars to ensure their safe, efficient, and reliable operation. This role involves diagnosing mechanical issues, performing regular inspections, and ensuring all ambulance vehicles meet the necessary safety and operational standards. 

Key Responsibilities

• Diagnose mechanical faults in engines, transmissions, suspension, braking, and steering systems.
• Carry out scheduled preventive maintenance (PM) as per the fleet PM calendar, including oil, filter, and fluid changes.
• Perform repair and overhaul of engines, gearboxes, differentials, and related assemblies.
• Inspect vehicles reporting off-road and provide accurate fault assessment and repair time estimates.
• Maintain proper records of work orders, parts used, and vehicle service history.
• Coordinate with the Fleet Coordinator / Workshop In-Charge on parts requisition and stock availability.
• Ensure repaired vehicles are road-tested and meet safety standards before being returned on-road.
• Support mobile workshop / roadside breakdown response as required.
• Follow workshop safety procedures and maintain a clean, organized work area.

Skills & Competencies

• Strong working knowledge of diesel engine systems.
• Ability to read and interpret service manuals and mechanical diagrams.
• Skilled in the use of diagnostic tools and standard workshop equipment.
• Good problem-solving ability and attention to detail.
• Willingness to work in shifts and respond to emergency breakdown calls.

Working Conditions

• Workshop and field environment; exposure to noise, grease, and moving vehicle parts.
• May require standing for extended periods and lifting of heavy parts/tools.
• On-call availability for emergency breakdowns, including nights and holidays.

Qualification: Matriculation with 3 S Workshop Certification / Diploma in Automobile or Mechanical Technology preferred.

Experience: Minimum 2–3 years of hands-on experience in vehicle mechanical repair, preferably on light commercial or fleet vehicles. Valid driving license preferred.
